Vasudeva I

Vasudeva I, the last of the illustrious Great Kushans, reigned as a prominent monarch in Northern India and Central Asia from at least one hundred ninety-one to two hundred thirty-two CE. His rule is marked by significant historical inscriptions dating from the sixty-fourth to the ninety-eighth year of Kanishka's era, indicating a period of stability and influence.

During his reign, Vasudeva I minted coins in the ancient city of Balkh, located in Bactria, showcasing the economic vitality of his empire. He faced challenges from the rising Sasanians and the initial incursions of the Kushano-Sasanians, which tested his leadership and military acumen.

Vasudeva I is notable for being the first Kushan king to adopt the name of the revered Hindu God Vāsudeva, a name synonymous with Krishna. This choice reflects his deepening connection to Hinduism, which he embraced during his reign, further solidifying his power base in Mathura.

Historical evidence, including the last named inscription of his predecessor Huvishka in the year sixty of the Kanishka era, suggests that Vasudeva I continued to rule as late as two hundred twenty-nine CE, marking a significant chapter in the history of the Kushan Empire.
