Veerappan

Veerappan, born on January 18, 1952, was a notorious Indian poacher and bandit whose criminal activities spanned an astonishing thirty-six years. He became infamous for his involvement in the illegal trade of sandalwood and ivory, as well as for his ruthless tactics, which included the kidnapping of prominent politicians for ransom.

Operating primarily in the scrub lands and forests of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, Veerappan was charged with the poaching of elephants and the smuggling of sandalwood. His criminal exploits led to the deaths of approximately one hundred eighty-four individuals, with nearly half of the victims being police officers and forest officials who sought to bring him to justice.

Veerappan's impact on wildlife was devastating; he was responsible for the poaching of around five hundred elephants, contributing significantly to the decline of the species in the peninsular region. His smuggling operations were lucrative, with ivory valued at two point six million US dollars and sandalwood worth approximately twenty-two million US dollars.

The extensive efforts to capture Veerappan placed a heavy financial burden on the governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, costing them over one hundred crore rupees. His legacy remains a complex narrative of crime, wildlife conservation challenges, and the relentless pursuit of law enforcement.
