Veljo Tormis

Veljo Tormis, born on August seventh, nineteen thirty, was a distinguished Estonian composer celebrated for his profound contributions to choral music. Regarded as one of the foremost contemporary choral composers, Tormis's extensive repertoire includes over five hundred individual choral works, predominantly a cappella. His compositions are deeply rooted in the rich tradition of ancient Estonian folksongs, known as regilaulud, which he masterfully incorporated into his music, whether through text, melody, or stylistic elements.

Among his most notable works is 'Curse Upon Iron' (Raua needmine), composed in nineteen seventy-two, which draws upon ancient Shamanistic traditions to create a poignant allegory about the horrors of war. Despite facing censorship from the Soviet government, many of Tormis's compositions were embraced due to their folk music foundations, allowing his artistic voice to resonate even in challenging times.

In the latter part of the twentieth century, Tormis's music gained international recognition, particularly through performances and recordings by esteemed ensembles such as the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under the direction of Tõnu Kaljuste. The nineties marked a new chapter in his career as he began receiving commissions from renowned a cappella groups, including the King's Singers and the Hilliard Ensemble.

Tormis famously articulated his relationship with folk music, stating, 'It is not I who makes use of folk music, it is folk music that makes use of me.' This sentiment reflects his belief in the importance of preserving traditional Estonian and Balto-Finnic music, viewing it as a cultural treasure that must be cherished and sustained through the art of song.
