Vera T. Sós

Vera T. Sós, born on September eleventh, nineteen thirty, is a distinguished Hungarian mathematician renowned for her expertise in number theory and combinatorics. Throughout her illustrious career, she has made significant contributions to the field, collaborating closely with prominent mathematicians such as Paul Erdős and Alfréd Rényi, as well as her husband, Pál Turán, who was also a noted analyst and number theorist.

Her academic journey began at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, where she worked in the Department of Analysis until nineteen eighty-seven. Following this period, she continued her research at the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, further solidifying her reputation in the mathematical community.

Vera Sós's remarkable achievements include her election as a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in nineteen eighty-five, followed by her full membership in nineteen ninety. In nineteen ninety-seven, she was honored with the prestigious Széchenyi Prize for her outstanding contributions to mathematics.

Among her notable works is the Kővári–Sós–Turán theorem, which addresses the maximum number of edges in a bipartite graph devoid of certain complete subgraphs. Additionally, she co-proved the friendship theorem with Erdős and Rényi, which states that in a finite graph where any two vertices share exactly one common neighbor, there exists a vertex connected to all others. In the realm of number theory, she independently proved the three-gap theorem, originally conjectured by Hugo Steinhaus.
