Vesna Vulović, born on January third, nineteen fifty, was a Serbian flight attendant who became renowned for surviving the highest fall without a parachute. On January twenty-six, nineteen seventy-two, she was the sole survivor of JAT Flight 367, which tragically crashed near Srbská Kamenice, Czechoslovakia, following an explosion attributed to a briefcase bomb.
After the catastrophic event, Vulović endured a harrowing recovery process. She spent several days in a coma and was hospitalized for months, suffering from severe injuries including a fractured skull, three broken vertebrae, broken legs, broken ribs, and a fractured pelvis. These injuries left her temporarily paralyzed from the waist down, yet she made an impressive recovery, albeit with a lasting limp.
Despite her traumatic experience, Vulović exhibited no fear of flying and was eager to return to her role as a flight attendant. However, Jat Airways assigned her to a desk job, believing her presence on flights would attract unwanted media attention. Her remarkable survival story turned her into a national heroine in Yugoslavia, garnering her celebrity status.
In the early nineteen nineties, Vulović was dismissed from JAT after participating in anti-government protests during the tumultuous breakup of Yugoslavia. Although she faced potential arrest, the government refrained from taking action due to the negative publicity it would generate. She remained active as a pro-democracy advocate until the Socialist Party of Serbia was ousted during the Bulldozer Revolution in October two thousand.
In her later years, Vulović lived a reclusive life in her Belgrade apartment, grappling with survivor guilt. After her divorce, she relied on a modest pension until her passing in two thousand sixteen, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and courage.
