Vibeke Skofterud

Vibeke Skofterud, born on April 20, 1980, was a prominent Norwegian cross-country skier known for her remarkable achievements in the sport. She gained international acclaim when she clinched a gold medal in the 4 × 5 km relay at the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010. Her Olympic journey also included a commendable eighth-place finish in the 30 km event at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002.

Throughout her career, Skofterud showcased her prowess at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, where she earned a complete set of medals in the 4 × 5 km relay: gold in 2005 and 2011, silver in 2003, and bronze in 2007. Her best individual performance came in 2003, where she finished thirteenth in the 5 km + 5 km double pursuit.

In 2006, she celebrated her first individual victory in a pursuit race in Norway, marking a significant milestone in her career. The following year, she made history by becoming the first Norwegian to win the Vasaloppet official ladies class, setting a new record time of four hours and eight minutes, twenty-four seconds, which was over eight minutes faster than the previous record from 1998.

Despite facing challenges during the 2012/2013 World Cup season due to illness and injuries, Skofterud made a comeback the following winter. However, after failing to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics, she decided to retire from the national team, shifting her focus to a career in ski marathon. Ultimately, she retired from cross-country skiing in 2015, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in the sport.
