Victor Ponta, born on September twentieth, nineteen seventy-two, is a prominent Romanian politician and jurist who held the office of Prime Minister from two thousand twelve to two thousand fifteen. His political journey began as a member of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies for Gorj County, a position he maintained from two thousand four until two thousand twenty, before returning to serve a seat in Dâmbovița County in two thousand twenty-four.
Ponta's political career includes significant roles such as Minister-Delegate for Relations with Parliament in the Emil Boc cabinet from two thousand eight to two thousand nine. He rose to prominence as the president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) from two thousand ten to two thousand fifteen and was a joint leader of the Social Liberal Union (USL) from two thousand twelve to two thousand fourteen, an alliance with the National Liberal Party (PNL).
His tenure as Prime Minister began with a local election victory for his alliance, although it was marred by civil society criticism following the removal of several Băsescu-associated figures from government-funded cultural institutions. A political crisis ensued, leading to an unsuccessful attempt to impeach President Băsescu, which was invalidated by the Constitutional Court due to low voter turnout. Ponta also faced controversy over allegations of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis.
Despite these challenges, Ponta led the USL to a decisive victory in parliamentary elections seven months after taking office, securing a full four-year term as premier. However, the USL coalition eventually disbanded, prompting him to form a new cabinet with the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) as partners. In the November two thousand fourteen presidential election, Ponta was a finalist but lost to Klaus Iohannis of the PNL.
Following the UDMR's exit from government, Ponta established a fourth cabinet with the Conservative Party (PC) and the Liberal Reformist Party (PLR) as junior partners. This cabinet lasted less than a year, resigning in the aftermath of the tragic Colectiv nightclub fire.
