Victorio

Victorio, born in 1825, was a prominent warrior and chief of the Warm Springs band of the Tchihendeh, also known as the Chihenne or Mimbreño division of the central Apaches. His leadership spanned across regions that are now part of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and the Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua.

During Victorio's War, which lasted from September 1879 to October 1880, he commanded a band of Apaches that never exceeded two hundred men. This group engaged in a series of fierce skirmishes and battles against the U.S. and Mexican armies, as well as the civilian populations in New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico. Victorio's tactical prowess was evident as he led his followers through numerous confrontations.

Tragically, the conflict culminated in the Battle of Tres Castillos in October 1880, where Victorio and most of his band were either killed or captured by the Mexican army. His legacy as a fierce leader and warrior remains a significant part of Apache history.
