Vidkun Quisling

Vidkun Quisling, born on July eighteenth, eighteen eighty-seven, was a prominent Norwegian military officer and politician who became infamous for his collaboration with Nazi Germany during World War II. His early career saw him gain international recognition as a close associate of explorer Fridtjof Nansen, particularly through his efforts in organizing humanitarian relief during the devastating Russian famine of nineteen twenty-one in Povolzhye. Quisling's diplomatic career included a posting to the Soviet Union, where he also managed British diplomatic affairs for a time.

Returning to Norway in nineteen twenty-nine, Quisling served as the minister of defense under the agrarian governments of Peder Kolstad and Jens Hundseid. In nineteen thirty-three, he founded the fascist party Nasjonal Samling, or National Gathering. Despite his initial popularity stemming from his attacks on the political left, the party struggled to gain traction, failing to secure any seats in the Storting by nineteen forty.

On April ninth, nineteen forty, during the German invasion of Norway, Quisling attempted a radio-broadcast coup d'état to seize power. However, his efforts were thwarted as the Germans preferred to legitimize the existing Norwegian government rather than recognize him. By February first, nineteen forty-two, he formed a government approved by the Germans and served as minister president, leading a pro-Nazi puppet regime that participated in the war efforts and facilitated the deportation of Jews to concentration camps in occupied Poland.

After the war, Quisling faced a legal purge in Norway, where he was convicted of embezzlement, murder, and high treason against the Norwegian state. His death sentence, executed by firing squad at Akershus Fortress in Oslo on October twenty-fourth, nineteen forty-five, sparked controversy due to its questionable legality. Since his execution, Quisling has been regarded as one of history's most notorious traitors, with his name becoming synonymous with betrayal in both English and Scandinavian languages.
