Viktor Yanukovych, born on July ninth, nineteen fifty, is a notable figure in Ukrainian politics, having served as the fourth president of Ukraine from two thousand ten to two thousand fourteen. His political career also included multiple terms as prime minister between two thousand two and two thousand seven, and he was a member of the Verkhovna Rada from two thousand six to two thousand ten. Yanukovych's presidency ended amid the tumultuous events of the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, which arose from widespread protests against his administration.
Before his ascent to national politics, Yanukovych was the governor of Donetsk Oblast from nineteen ninety-seven to two thousand two, and he held the position of chairman of the oblast's legislature from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand one. His initial foray into presidential politics came in the two thousand four election, where he was initially declared the winner against Viktor Yushchenko. However, allegations of electoral fraud led to the Orange Revolution, resulting in a rerun of the election that Yanukovych ultimately lost.
In two thousand ten, Yanukovych successfully ran for president again, defeating Yulia Tymoshenko in an election recognized as free and fair by international observers. His administration aimed for economic modernization and closer ties with the European Union, yet it was marred by accusations of democratic backsliding, including the imprisonment of political opponents and a decline in press freedom. The turning point came in November two thousand thirteen when he abruptly withdrew from signing an association agreement with the EU, leading to the Euromaidan protests.
The protests escalated, culminating in February two thousand fourteen when government forces killed nearly one hundred demonstrators. Following an agreement with opposition leaders, Yanukovych fled the capital on February twenty-first, just hours before the parliament voted to remove him from office. He subsequently sought refuge in Russia, where he claimed to still be the legitimate head of state. In absentia, he was sentenced to thirteen years in prison for high treason in two thousand nineteen, and he has since been regarded as one of Ukraine's least favorable presidents.
