Vineh of Bulgaria

Vineh of Bulgaria, a notable monarch of the mid-eighth century, belonged to the Vokil clan and ruled for seven years. His ascension to the throne followed the defeat of his predecessor, Kormisosh, by the Eastern Roman Emperor Constantine V. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a tumultuous reign.

In approximately seven hundred fifty-six, Vineh faced a significant challenge when Constantine launched a campaign against Bulgaria, leading to a decisive battle at Marcellae, known today as Karnobat. The Bulgarian army, under Vineh's command, was defeated, prompting the monarch to seek peace by offering his own children as hostages.

Despite the initial setback, Vineh's fortunes shifted in seven hundred fifty-nine when Constantine invaded Bulgaria once more. This time, however, the Roman forces were ambushed in the treacherous mountain passes of the Stara Planina during the battle of the Rishki Pass. Although victorious, Vineh chose not to pursue further military action and instead sought to re-establish peace, a decision that ultimately led to his downfall.

The Bulgarian nobility, dissatisfied with his approach, turned against Vineh, resulting in a tragic massacre of him and his family, with the exception of Pagan of Bulgaria. Vineh's legacy endures, as Vineh Peak on Rugged Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, is named in his honor.
