Violet King Henry

Violet King Henry, born on October eighteenth, nineteen twenty-nine, was a trailblazing Canadian lawyer and activist whose legacy continues to inspire. As the first Black woman lawyer in Canada, she broke significant barriers in a profession that was predominantly male and white. Her determination and resilience paved the way for future generations of lawyers from diverse backgrounds.

In addition to her groundbreaking achievements in law, King made history as the first Black person to graduate with a law degree in Alberta. This remarkable accomplishment was further underscored by her being the first Black individual to be admitted to the Alberta Bar, marking a significant milestone in the fight for equality and representation in the legal field.

Beyond her legal career, Violet King Henry also made her mark in the nonprofit sector. She became the first woman to hold a senior management position with the American national YMCA, showcasing her leadership skills and commitment to community service. Her work in this role demonstrated her dedication to social justice and the empowerment of marginalized communities.
