Virgílio do Carmo da Silva, born on November twenty-seventh, nineteen sixty-seven, is a prominent Timorese Catholic prelate. He was appointed Bishop of Dili on January thirtieth, two thousand sixteen, and subsequently became an archbishop when the diocese was elevated in two thousand nineteen.
Before ascending to the episcopacy, he dedicated his service to the Society of St. Francis de Sales, commonly known as the Salesians of Don Bosco, where he held various significant positions.
In a historic moment for Timor-Leste, Pope Francis elevated him to the rank of cardinal on August twenty-seventh, two thousand twenty-two, marking him as the first cardinal from the nation.
