Vivian Barbot, born on July seventh, nineteen forty-one, in Saint-Marc, Haiti, is a distinguished Canadian teacher, activist, and politician. She is the daughter of Clément Barbot and has made significant contributions to Canadian politics, particularly as a member of the Bloc Québécois. Her leadership journey includes serving as the interim leader and president of the party following the resignation of Gilles Duceppe in May twenty-eleven.
Barbot's political career is marked by her historic achievement as the first individual from a visible minority group to lead a Canadian federal political party with parliamentary representation. She represented the riding of Papineau as a Member of Parliament, where she notably defeated former Liberal Cabinet Minister Pierre Pettigrew in the two thousand six election, marking a significant victory for the Bloc.
Despite her successes, Barbot faced challenges in subsequent elections, including defeats by Justin Trudeau in both the two thousand eight and two thousand eleven elections. The latter election was particularly tumultuous for the Bloc, resulting in the loss of Gilles Duceppe and all but four of the party's MPs. Following this, Barbot stepped into the role of interim party leader and president, guiding the party until Daniel Paillé was elected as her successor on December eleventh, twenty eleven.
