Vivian Maier

Vivian Maier, born on February first, nineteen twenty-six, was an American street photographer whose remarkable work remained largely undiscovered until after her passing. Throughout her life, she captured over one hundred fifty thousand photographs, focusing primarily on the vibrant people and striking architecture of Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles. Her passion for photography also took her around the globe, where she documented diverse cultures and landscapes.

Despite her prolific output, Maier's photographs were largely unknown during her lifetime, with many of her negatives left undeveloped. It wasn't until two thousand seven that her work began to gain attention when Chicago collector John Maloof acquired a selection of her photos. Around the same time, fellow collectors Ron Slattery and Randy Prow stumbled upon additional prints and negatives stored in her boxes and suitcases.

The first glimpse of Maier's work on the Internet came in July two thousand eight, when Slattery published some of her photographs, though it initially garnered little response. A turning point occurred in October two thousand nine when Maloof linked his blog to a curated selection of her images on Flickr, leading to a viral sensation that captivated thousands. This newfound interest propelled Maier's work into the spotlight, earning her critical acclaim and leading to exhibitions worldwide.

Her life and artistry have inspired numerous books, music, and documentary films, most notably the acclaimed film 'Finding Vivian Maier' released in two thousand thirteen. This documentary premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the eighty-seventh Academy Awards, further solidifying her legacy as a significant figure in the world of photography.
