Vivien Leigh, born on November 5, 1913, was a distinguished British actress renowned for her captivating performances on both stage and screen. After completing her drama school education, she made her film debut in 1935 with small roles, eventually rising to prominence with her portrayal of the heroine in 'Fire Over England' in 1937. Her remarkable talent earned her two Academy Awards for Best Actress, first for her iconic role as Scarlett O'Hara in 'Gone with the Wind' (1939) and later as Blanche DuBois in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' (1951), a role she had previously embodied on stage in London's West End.

Leigh's accolades extended beyond the Oscars; she also received the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her performance in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' and a Tony Award for her work in the Broadway musical 'Tovarich' in 1963. Despite her cinematic success, Leigh was primarily a stage performer, showcasing her versatility through a range of characters from the comedies of Noël Coward and George Bernard Shaw to Shakespearean roles such as Ophelia, Cleopatra, and Lady Macbeth.

Leigh's personal life was often intertwined with her professional one, particularly during her marriage to Laurence Olivier from 1940 to 1960. The couple starred in numerous stage productions together, with Olivier frequently directing. Despite her beauty, Leigh sometimes felt that her physical attributes hindered her from being taken seriously as an actress, and she earned a reputation for being difficult to work with.
