Vlad II Dracul

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Vlad II Dracul

Vlad II Dracul, born on August thirtieth, 1395, was a notable monarch who ruled as Voivode of Wallachia during two significant periods: from 1436 to 1442 and again from 1443 to 1447. He is perhaps best known as the father of Vlad the Impaler, famously associated with the Dracula legend. His early life was marked by his status as an illegitimate son of Mircea I of Wallachia, which shaped his tumultuous path to power.

Vlad's formative years were spent at the court of Sigismund of Luxembourg, where he was inducted into the prestigious Order of the Dragon in 1431, earning him the moniker 'Dracul.' This recognition was pivotal, as it established his claim to the throne of Wallachia, although he faced challenges from his half-brother, Alexander I Aldea, who was under the influence of the Ottoman Sultan, Murad II.

Following Alexander's death in 1436, Vlad seized control of Wallachia with the backing of Hungary. However, the political landscape shifted after the death of Sigismund in 1437, leading Vlad to pay homage to Murad II and participate in military campaigns against Transylvania. His reign was marked by a series of conflicts, including a notable capture in 1442, which forced him to leave his sons as hostages in the Ottoman court.

Despite these challenges, Vlad regained his position in Wallachia with Ottoman support in 1443. He maintained a delicate balance during Hunyadi's Long Campaign against the Ottomans, contributing troops to the Crusade of Varna. His military acumen was demonstrated in 1445 when he captured the strategic fortress of Giurgiu. However, his peace with the Ottomans in 1446 or 1447 strained his relationship with Hunyadi, leading to further conflict and ultimately his demise in late November of that year.
