Barrett's wrestling career took off when he won the inaugural season of NXT in two thousand ten, leading to his main roster debut on Raw later that year. He quickly rose to fame as the leader of The Nexus, a notorious faction comprised of NXT's first season rookies. In two thousand ten alone, he headlined five pay-per-view events, including SummerSlam and Survivor Series, where he made valiant attempts to claim the WWE Championship.

In two thousand eleven, Barrett formed The Corre with former Nexus members, but after its disbandment, he established himself as a five-time Intercontinental Champion. His character evolved over the years, notably adopting the persona of Bad News Barrett in two thousand thirteen, where he relished in delivering unfortunate news to fans. Following his victory in the two thousand fifteen King of the Ring tournament, he embraced the royal character of King Barrett, maintaining his status as a villain throughout his WWE tenure.
