Walter Erwin Diewert

Walter Erwin Diewert, a prominent Canadian economist, was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, in nineteen forty-one. He embarked on his academic journey at the University of British Columbia, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in nineteen sixty-three, followed by a Master of Arts in mathematics in nineteen sixty-four. His pursuit of knowledge culminated in a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in nineteen sixty-eight.

Since nineteen seventy, Diewert has been a dedicated professor of economics at the University of British Columbia, contributing significantly to the field. He also holds a joint appointment at the University of New South Wales and serves as Vice President of the Society for Economic Measurement. His expertise lies in addressing complex empirical issues, particularly in the measurement of price indexes and productivity.

Among his notable contributions, Diewert's analysis in two thousand twelve revealed that Statistics Canada had significantly understated productivity growth in Canada. His work has earned him recognition, including the Shiskin Memorial Award for Economic Statistics in two thousand five for his advancements in index number theory. In two thousand eight, he was honored as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association, solidifying his status as a leading figure in economics.
