Walther Müller

Walther Müller, born on September sixth, nineteen oh five, was a prominent German physicist renowned for his significant contributions to the field of ionizing radiation measurement. His most notable achievement is the enhancement of Hans Geiger's counter, which is now widely recognized as the Geiger-Müller tube, an essential instrument in radiation detection.

Müller's academic journey began at the University of Kiel, where he pursued studies in physics, chemistry, and philosophy. In nineteen twenty-five, he became the inaugural PhD student of Hans Geiger, who had recently been appointed to a professorship at Kiel. Their collaborative research on the ionization of gases through collisions paved the way for the invention of the Geiger-Müller counter, a groundbreaking tool that has become indispensable in measuring radioactive radiation.

After serving as a professor at the University of Tübingen, Müller transitioned to a career as an industrial physicist, dedicating the remainder of his professional life to research and development in Germany. He later took on the role of an advisor for the Australian Postmaster-General's Department Research Laboratories in Melbourne, before moving to the United States, where he established a company focused on manufacturing Geiger-Müller tubes.
