Wanyan Liang, born on February twenty-fourth, one thousand one hundred twenty-two, was an influential aristocrat during a tumultuous period in Chinese history. His life unfolded against the backdrop of the Jin dynasty, a time marked by significant political and military challenges.

Liang played a pivotal role in the Jin dynasty's efforts to sinicise its governance, particularly in Yanjing, which is present-day Beijing. This policy aimed to integrate Han Chinese culture and practices into the ruling framework of the Jin dynasty, reflecting a complex interplay of power and cultural exchange.

However, the fortunes of the Jin dynasty shifted dramatically in the year one thousand one hundred sixty-one when they faced a crushing defeat at the Battle of Caishi against the Southern Song dynasty. This loss precipitated a rebellion among Liang's subordinates, leading to his assassination. Despite his status as an emperor during his lifetime, his legacy was marred by posthumous demotions.

In one thousand one hundred sixty-two, his successor, Emperor Shizong, demoted him to the title of
