Warwick Estevam Kerr

One of Kerr's most notable achievements was his involvement in the development of the Africanized bee in the western hemisphere. This phenomenon can be traced back to nineteen fifty-seven in Rio Claro, São Paulo, where an assistant beekeeper inadvertently released twenty-six Tanzanian queen bees (Apis mellifera scutellata) by neglecting to install a queen excluder while reassembling a hive. This incident, which occurred in hives operated by Kerr, marked a significant turning point in the study of hybrid bees.

Kerr's innovative approach to interbreeding honey bees from Europe and southern Africa not only transformed the landscape of beekeeping but also sparked widespread interest in the genetic diversity of bees.
