Wasfi Tal

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Wasfi Tal

Wasfi Tal, born on January first, nineteen nineteen, was a prominent Jordanian politician, statesman, and military officer. He served as the 15th Prime Minister of Jordan during three distinct terms: from nineteen sixty-two to nineteen sixty-three, nineteen sixty-five to nineteen sixty-seven, and from nineteen seventy until his tragic assassination in nineteen seventy-one.

Born in Arapgir, within the Ottoman Empire, Tal was the son of the esteemed Jordanian poet Mustafa Wahbi Tal and a Kurdish mother. His early education took place in Jordan, after which he pursued further studies at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. Following his education, he joined the British Army in Mandatory Palestine, receiving training at a British-run military academy, and later fought against Israel as part of the irregular Arab Liberation Army during the nineteen forty-eight Arab–Israeli War.

As an ardent Arab nationalist, Tal was a strong advocate for collective Arab action and supported the Palestinian cause. His post-war career in the Jordanian government saw him rise through the ranks, particularly after catching the attention of King Hussein. His initial term as prime minister in nineteen sixty-two was brief, as he resigned in nineteen sixty-three amid criticism of his perceived pro-Western stance. He returned to the position in nineteen sixty-five, overseeing a period of economic improvement, but stepped down just before the Six Day War in nineteen sixty-seven.

Tal's final term began in nineteen seventy during the tumultuous events of Black September, a conflict that resulted in the expulsion of Palestine Liberation Organization fighters from Jordan. His actions during this period earned him both loyalty from King Hussein and popularity among Jordanians for his decisive measures against the fedayeen. However, he faced widespread condemnation from Arab supporters of the fedayeen. Tragically, he was assassinated by the Black September Organization outside a Cairo hotel during an Arab League conference, with his assassins later acquitted by an Egyptian court.
