Washington Luís

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Washington Luís

Washington Luís, born on October twenty-sixth, eighteen sixty-nine, was a prominent Brazilian politician, lawyer, and historian. He is best remembered for his tenure as the thirteenth president of Brazil, a position he held during a tumultuous period in the nation's history.

Before ascending to the presidency, Luís served as the governor of São Paulo state, having been elected to that role in nineteen twenty. His political career was marked by his affiliation with the Republican Party of São Paulo (PRP), through which he navigated the complexities of Brazilian politics during the First Brazilian Republic.

His presidency began in nineteen twenty-six, but it was soon overshadowed by the global economic crisis known as the Great Depression. This crisis severely eroded his support, leading to significant challenges in governance. In a bid to secure a stable future for Brazil, he chose his friend Júlio Prestes as his successor.

However, just three weeks before the conclusion of his term, Washington Luís was overthrown in a coup d'état during the Revolution of nineteen thirty. This marked the end of his presidency and the beginning of a brief period of military rule in Brazil.
