Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky, born on December fourth, eighteen sixty-six in Moscow, was a pioneering Russian painter and art theorist who made significant contributions to the world of abstraction in Western art. His artistic journey began rather late, as he commenced his painting studies at the age of thirty, focusing on life-drawing, sketching, and anatomy.

In eighteen ninety-six, Kandinsky relocated to Munich, where he initially studied at Anton Ažbe's private school before advancing to the Academy of Fine Arts. During this period, he developed a close relationship with German artist Gabriele Münter, first as her teacher and later as her partner. His life took a turn in nineteen fourteen when he returned to Moscow following the outbreak of World War I.

After the Russian Revolution, Kandinsky became involved in the cultural administration under Anatoly Lunacharsky, contributing to the establishment of the Museum of the Culture of Painting. However, his spiritual outlook clashed with the materialistic ethos of Soviet society, prompting his return to Germany in nineteen twenty, where he joined the Bauhaus school of art and architecture. He taught there until the Nazis closed the institution in nineteen thirty-three.

Subsequently, Kandinsky moved to France, where he spent the remainder of his life. He became a French citizen in nineteen thirty-nine and continued to create some of his most notable works. His artistic legacy endured until his passing in Neuilly-sur-Seine in nineteen forty-four.
