Wei Jingsheng

Wei Jingsheng, born on May twentieth, nineteen fifty, is a prominent Chinese human rights defender and writer, renowned for his unwavering commitment to the democracy movement in China. His most notable contribution to this cause is the essay "The Fifth Modernization," which he boldly posted on the Democracy Wall in Beijing in nineteen seventy-eight, advocating for political reform and greater freedoms.

As a direct consequence of his activism, Wei faced severe repercussions from the Chinese government. He was arrested and convicted of "counter-revolutionary" activities, leading to his detention as a political prisoner from nineteen seventy-nine until nineteen ninety-three. This period of incarceration lasted a staggering fourteen years, during which he endured harsh conditions and isolation.

Upon his brief release in nineteen ninety-three, Wei continued to speak out against the regime, engaging with visiting journalists and furthering his advocacy for human rights. However, this led to his re-arrest, resulting in an additional imprisonment from nineteen ninety-four to nineteen ninety-seven, culminating in a total of eighteen years spent behind bars.

On November sixteenth, nineteen ninety-seven, Wei was deported to the United States on medical parole. Despite living abroad, he remains a Chinese citizen and in nineteen ninety-eight, he founded the Wei Jingsheng Foundation in New York City, now based in Washington, D.C. The foundation's mission is to promote human rights and advocate for the democratization of China, continuing Wei's lifelong fight for freedom and justice.
