Wei Yan

Wei Yan, courtesy name Wenchang, was a distinguished military general and politician during the tumultuous Three Kingdoms period of China. Born in the year two hundred, he initially served under the warlord Liu Bei during the waning days of the Eastern Han dynasty. His rise through the ranks was marked by his exceptional military prowess, particularly after Liu Bei's conquest of Yi Province in two hundred fourteen.

As a prominent figure in the Shu military, Wei Yan quickly gained recognition for his strategic capabilities and leadership. By two hundred nineteen, he had been appointed as the Administrator of Hanzhong Commandery and took on the role of Area Commander, further solidifying his influence within the Shu Han state.

Wei Yan's military career was characterized by his active participation in the Northern Expeditions led by the Shu regent Zhuge Liang against their rival state, Cao Wei, from two hundred twenty-eight to two hundred thirty-four. His contributions during these campaigns were significant, showcasing his commitment to the Shu cause.

However, the tides of fortune turned after the death of Zhuge Liang in approximately September two hundred thirty-four. Wei Yan faced a tragic end when he was executed by fellow Shu general Ma Dai, who accused him of treason, marking a somber conclusion to the life of a once-celebrated military leader.
