She gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Miss Shirley Brahms in the beloved BBC sitcom Are You Being Served?, which aired from nineteen seventy-two to nineteen eighty-five. Richard's career also included a significant role as Pauline Fowler in the iconic soap opera EastEnders, where she captivated audiences from nineteen eighty-five until her departure in two thousand six.

Despite her well-known Cockney accent, Richard's roots trace back to Middlesbrough. Her early life was marked by tragedy, as she faced the loss of her father to suicide. To support her aspirations in acting, she worked in department stores to fund her drama school education. Her on-screen journey began in the early nineteen sixties, with notable appearances including her role as Joyce Harker in The Newcomers from nineteen sixty-seven to nineteen sixty-nine.
