Werewere Liking, born on May first, nineteen fifty, is a multifaceted artist based in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Renowned as an actor, novelist, writer, playwright, poet, sculptor, painter, and director, she has made significant contributions to the cultural landscape of her country and beyond.
In nineteen eighty, Liking founded the Ki-Yi Mbock theatre troupe, which has become a vital platform for artistic expression. Five years later, she established the Ki-Yi village, dedicated to the artistic education of young people, fostering a new generation of creatives.
Her literary work includes the novel 'Elle sera de jaspe et de corail,' a unique song-novel that explores themes of gender and identity through the lens of a misovire, or 'man-hater.' This innovative narrative presents a dialectic between two men, envisioning a new race free from the constraints of patriarchy and colonialism. Additionally, she is credited with developing the African feminist theory known as 'misovirism.'
In recognition of her impactful contributions to culture and society, Liking received the Prince Claus Award in two thousand and the Noma Award in two thousand five for her book 'La mémoire amputée.'
