Wiley Post

Wiley Post, born on November 22, 1898, was a pioneering American aviator and explorer who made significant contributions to aviation during the interwar period. He is best remembered as the first pilot to fly solo around the world, a feat that showcased his exceptional skills and determination.

Post's innovative spirit led him to explore high-altitude flying, where he played a crucial role in the development of one of the first pressure suits. His groundbreaking work also included the discovery of the jet stream, which would later revolutionize air travel.

Tragically, on August 15, 1935, Wiley Post's life was cut short when he and American humorist Will Rogers were killed in an aircraft crash shortly after takeoff from a lagoon near Point Barrow in the Territory of Alaska. Their untimely deaths marked a significant loss to the aviation community.

Post's legacy lives on, with his modified Lockheed Vega aircraft, the Winnie Mae, having been displayed at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center from two thousand three to two thousand eleven. It is currently showcased in the 'Time and Navigation' gallery on the second floor of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
