Wilhelm Dörpfeld

Wilhelm Dörpfeld, born on December twenty-sixth, eighteen fifty-three, was a distinguished German architect and archaeologist whose contributions significantly shaped the field of archaeology. He is renowned for pioneering stratigraphic excavation techniques and for his meticulous graphical documentation of archaeological projects, which set new standards in the discipline.

Dörpfeld's most notable work involved the exploration of Bronze Age sites across the Mediterranean, particularly at Tiryns and Hisarlik, the latter being the legendary site of Troy. He succeeded Heinrich Schliemann in these excavations, continuing the quest to uncover the historical realities behind the myths of ancient texts.

Like Schliemann, Dörpfeld championed the belief that the locations described in Homer's epics corresponded to actual historical sites. Although some of his specific claims have been challenged by later archaeologists, the core idea that these places have real-world counterparts has gained acceptance, underscoring his lasting impact on the field.
