Wilkie Collins

Wilkie Collins, born on January eighth, eighteen twenty-four, was a prominent English writer and playwright, celebrated for his contributions to the mystery genre. His most notable works include 'The Woman in White' published in eighteen sixty, which is recognized as an early sensation novel, and 'The Moonstone' from eighteen sixty-eight, a groundbreaking detective novel that laid the foundation for modern police procedural narratives.

Collins was born to the painter William Collins and his wife, Harriet Geddes, in London. At the age of twelve, he relocated to Italy with his family, where he spent two years immersed in the culture and language, learning both Italian and French. Initially, he ventured into the world of commerce as a tea merchant before turning his focus to writing.

His literary career took off after the publication of his first novel, 'Antonina,' in eighteen fifty. It was during this time that he formed a significant friendship with Charles Dickens, who became both a mentor and collaborator. Collins contributed to Dickens' journals, 'Household Words' and 'All the Year Round,' further solidifying his place in the literary world. By the eighteen sixties, he had achieved financial stability and garnered an international readership.

Despite his success, Collins faced personal challenges, particularly in the form of opium addiction, which he developed in response to his gout. This struggle affected both his health and the reception of his later works. Collins was also known for his critical views on marriage, having maintained relationships with two women: the widow Caroline Graves, with whom he lived for most of his life, and Martha Rudd, with whom he fathered three children.
