Willard Metcalf

Willard Metcalf, born on July first, eighteen fifty-eight in Lowell, Massachusetts, was a distinguished American painter whose artistic journey began with studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His pursuit of excellence took him across the Atlantic to the Académie Julian in Paris, where he honed his skills and developed a unique artistic voice.

Initially recognized for his figure painting and illustration, Metcalf soon found his true calling in landscape painting. His talent flourished, and he became a prominent figure in the art community, notably as one of the Ten American Painters who, in eighteen ninety-seven, made the bold decision to secede from the Society of American Artists, seeking greater creative freedom.

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Metcalf dedicated several years to teaching, sharing his knowledge as an instructor at the Women's Art School at Cooper Union in New York and at the Art Students League. His influence extended beyond the classroom; in eighteen ninety-three, he became a member of the American Watercolor Society, further solidifying his reputation in the art world.

Metcalf is often associated with American Impressionism, celebrated for his evocative New England landscapes. His involvement with the Old Lyme Art Colony in Connecticut and his impactful years at the Cornish Art Colony contributed significantly to his legacy, leaving an indelible mark on the American art scene.
