Willem Piso

Willem Piso, born in Leiden in 1611, was a prominent Dutch physician and naturalist whose contributions to the fields of medicine and biology have left a lasting legacy. His early career was marked by a significant expedition to Dutch Brazil, where he served as an expedition doctor from 1637 to 1644. This venture was sponsored by the esteemed count Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen and the Dutch West India Company, providing Piso with a unique opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity of the tropics.

During his time in Brazil, Piso immersed himself in the study of the local flora and fauna, laying the groundwork for what would become the field of tropical medicine. His observations and research not only advanced scientific understanding but also contributed to the practical applications of medicine in tropical environments.

After returning to Europe, Piso continued to engage in various scientific pursuits, including botany and ornithology. His work as a draftsperson further complemented his scientific endeavors, allowing him to document his findings with precision and artistry. He remained active in the scientific community until his death in Amsterdam on November twenty-eighth, sixteen seventy-eight.
