Willi Herold

Willi Herold, born on 11 September 1925, is infamously remembered as the Executioner of Emsland. His life took a dark turn during the final days of the Second World War in Europe when he deserted from the Luftwaffe, the aerial warfare branch of the German military.

In a shocking twist of fate, Herold assumed the identity of a captain and orchestrated the mass execution of German deserters who were imprisoned. This heinous act marked him as a war criminal, highlighting the moral complexities and brutalities of wartime actions.

After the war, Herold's reign of terror came to an end when he was apprehended by British forces. His trial for war crimes culminated in a death sentence, and he was executed on 14 November 1946 at Wolfenbüttel Prison, sealing his legacy as a figure of infamy in the annals of history.
