William Cushing

William Cushing, born on March first, seventeen thirty-two, was a prominent American lawyer, judge, and politician. He is best remembered as one of the original five associate justices of the United States Supreme Court, a position he held from his confirmation by the United States Senate on September twenty-six, seventeen eighty-nine, until his death. His remarkable tenure of twenty years and eleven months remains the longest among the inaugural members of the Court.

In January seventeen ninety-six, President George Washington nominated Cushing to the esteemed position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Although he was confirmed for this prestigious role, he ultimately declined the appointment, choosing instead to continue his service as an associate justice.

Notably, Cushing was the last judge in the United States to don a full wig as part of his court attire, a testament to the traditions of his time. His contributions to the legal landscape of the nation have left an enduring legacy, reflecting the evolution of the judiciary in the early years of the United States.
