William Diller Matthew

William Diller Matthew, born on February nineteenth, eighteen seventy-one, in Saint John, New Brunswick, was a distinguished vertebrate paleontologist whose work primarily focused on mammal fossils. His early academic pursuits included contributions to mineralogy, petrological geology, botany, and trilobites, showcasing his diverse interests in the earth sciences.

Matthew was the son of George Frederic Matthew, an amateur geologist and paleontologist, and Katherine Diller Matthew. His father's passion for the earth sciences greatly influenced William, leading him to pursue an A.B. at the University of New Brunswick in eighteen eighty-nine, followed by a Ph.D. from Columbia University in eighteen ninety-four.

Throughout his career, Matthew served as curator at the American Museum of Natural History from the mid-1890s until nineteen twenty-seven. He then took on the role of director at the University of California Museum of Paleontology from nineteen twenty-seven to nineteen thirty. His contributions to the field earned him election to the American Philosophical Society.

In addition to his professional achievements, Matthew was a devoted father to Margaret Matthew Colbert, an accomplished artist, illustrator, and sculptor known for her work in visualizing extinct species. His legacy in paleontology continues to inspire future generations of scientists.
