William Dobson

William Dobson, born on February twenty-fourth, sixteen ten, was a distinguished English painter renowned for his exceptional portrait work. Acknowledged as one of the first significant English painters, he garnered praise from his contemporary, John Aubrey, who referred to him as 'the most excellent painter that England has yet bred.' Art critic Waldemar Januszczak further recognized him as the first British-born painter of genius.

After completing his initial apprenticeship, Dobson joined the studio of the German-born artist Francis Cleyn. It is believed that he had access to the Royal Collection, where he may have copied masterpieces by Titian and Anthony van Dyck. However, details about his career during the 1630s remain sparse.

Following the death of van Dyck in sixteen forty-one, Dobson secured royal commissions from Charles I of England. Although unverified sources suggest he became serjeant painter to the king and Groom of the Chamber, the specifics of his introduction to the monarch are unclear. His later years were marked by the turmoil of the English Civil War, which necessitated his relocation to the royal court in Oxford, where he painted prominent cavaliers, including Charles Lucas and Prince Rupert of the Rhine.

Most of Dobson's surviving works are half-length portraits dating from sixteen forty-two. As the war progressed, evidence suggests that his materials became increasingly scarce. In sixteen forty-six, he returned to London, where he tragically passed away in poverty at the young age of thirty-five. Today, examples of his artistry can be found in art galleries across the UK, the US, and New Zealand, as well as in several English country houses.
