William Dow

William Dow, born on March twenty-seventh, eighteen hundred in Muthill, Perthshire, was a prominent British-born brewer and financier who made significant contributions to the brewing industry in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. As the eldest son of Dr. William Dow, a respected brewmaster, and Anne Mason, he was immersed in the brewing tradition that his family had upheld since sixteen fifty-two.

In approximately eighteen eighteen, Dow emigrated to Montreal, Lower Canada, where he initially worked as a foreman at Thomas Dunn's brewery. His expertise and dedication quickly led him to become a partner in the business. His younger brother, Andrew, who also trained in brewing, joined him, and following the death of Dunn, the brewery was rebranded as William Dow and Company, which later became known as Dow Breweries.

Under Dow's leadership, the brewery emerged as a formidable competitor to Molson's, the largest brewery in the city at the time. In addition to his brewing endeavors, Dow was also a financier, showcasing his versatility and business acumen. In eighteen sixty, he constructed Strathearn House, a grand residence located in Montreal's prestigious Golden Square Mile, further solidifying his status in the community.
