Born in Liverpool to Scottish parents, Gladstone entered the House of Commons in eighteen thirty-two. Initially aligned with the High Tory faction, he transitioned to the Peelite faction in eighteen forty-six, which eventually merged into the Liberal Party in eighteen fifty-nine.
