William Forsell Kirby, born on January fourteenth, eighteen forty-four, was a distinguished English entomologist and folklorist renowned for his extensive research in the field of Lepidoptera. His passion for entomology led him to specialize in the study of stick insects, a niche that would see him describe nearly seventy species and twenty-two genera, significantly contributing to the understanding of these fascinating creatures.

Kirby's dedication to his work was evident in the sheer scale of his collection, which filled one hundred and twenty cabinets. He famously claimed that upon reorganization, his collection would require five hundred drawers, a testament to the depth and breadth of his studies. Among his notable contributions is the stick insect Phobaeticus kirbyi, which was described from Borneo and named in his honor by Brunner in nineteen oh seven. This species is recognized as one of the largest stick insects in the world, further solidifying Kirby's legacy in entomology.
