William Foster Cockshutt, born on October seventeenth, eighteen fifty-five, in Brantford, Canada West, was a prominent Canadian politician and businessman. He was the son of Ignatius Cockshutt and received his education in Brantford and at the Galt College Institute. His early career included working for a produce firm and in a tea warehouse in England before he returned to Ontario to join the family business alongside his brother James.

As a merchant and manufacturer, Cockshutt played a significant role in the Hydro-Electric Power Commission and served as president of the Cockshutt Plow Company from eighteen eighty-five until eighteen eighty-eight, stepping into the role after the untimely death of his brother from tuberculosis at the young age of thirty-four. In eighteen eighty-eight, he was appointed president of the local Board of Trade, further solidifying his influence in the community.

Cockshutt's political career began with an unsuccessful bid for the federal riding of Brant South in eighteen eighty-seven. However, he was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the electoral district of Brantford during the general elections of nineteen oh four. A member of the Conservative Party, he faced defeat in nineteen oh eight but made a comeback, being re-elected in nineteen eleven and nineteen seventeen, only to be defeated again in nineteen twenty-one.

In addition to his political endeavors, Cockshutt served as an honorary colonel of the 125th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. His personal life saw him marry Minnie Turner Ashton in eighteen ninety-one, marking a significant milestone in his life.
