Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of William H. Keeler

William H. Keeler, born on March fourth, nineteen thirty-one, was a prominent American cardinal of the Catholic Church. He served as the archbishop of Baltimore, Maryland, from nineteen eighty-nine until two thousand seven, and was elevated to the College of Cardinals in nineteen ninety-four. Prior to this, he held the positions of auxiliary bishop and bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg in Pennsylvania.

During his tenure as archbishop, Keeler was recognized for his decisive actions regarding allegations of inappropriate conduct among priests. He was instrumental in the restoration of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the oldest cathedral in the United States, which underwent extensive repairs and was restored to its original grandeur by two thousand six.

Keeler was also known for fostering interfaith relationships, particularly with Jewish and Protestant communities. His leadership extended to the national level as he served as president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from nineteen ninety-two to nineteen ninety-five.

In response to the sexual abuse crisis within the Church, Keeler took the significant step of publishing the names of fifty-seven priests who had been credibly accused of child abuse in two thousand two. However, in two thousand eighteen, the Diocese of Harrisburg removed his name from its facilities due to criticisms regarding his handling of abuse cases.
