William John McKeag

William John McKeag, born on March seventeenth, nineteen twenty-eight in Winnipeg, was a prominent entrepreneur and politician in Manitoba. He pursued his education at the University of Manitoba and took the helm of Security Storage Limited, a family business, in nineteen fifty-two. In nineteen sixty, he founded the McKeag-Harris Realty and Development company, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.

McKeag's political journey began in nineteen fifty-eight when he ran as a Liberal-Progressive candidate for the Manitoba legislature in the affluent River Heights riding. Unfortunately, he faced defeat against the Progressive Conservative candidate W.B. Scarth during a significant political shift in the province. His local political involvement continued as he served as a councilor in Tuxedo from nineteen sixty-six to nineteen sixty-nine and chaired the Greater Winnipeg Election Committee from nineteen sixty-eight to nineteen seventy.

In nineteen seventy, at the age of forty-two, McKeag made history as the youngest lieutenant governor of Manitoba, appointed by Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Although the role was largely ceremonial, he held the position until nineteen seventy-six, during which he had limited influence over the government led by Edward Schreyer. His contributions to the community were recognized when he was appointed Honorary Colonel of The Fort Garry Horse in June nineteen seventy-three.

McKeag's legacy continued beyond his tenure as lieutenant governor. He was honored with the Order of Canada in nineteen ninety-six and the Order of Manitoba in two thousand. He passed away on August twenty-third, two thousand seven, at the age of seventy-nine, leaving behind a legacy of public service and a family that includes three daughters and one son with his wife, Dawn, the daughter of former Premier Douglas Campbell.
