William McGillivray

William McGillivray, born in 1764, was a prominent Scottish-born Canadian fur trader who played a pivotal role in the North West Company. He succeeded his uncle, Simon McTavish, as the last chief partner of the company, navigating the complexities of the fur trade until its eventual merger with the Hudson's Bay Company.

In addition to his business acumen, McGillivray was an influential political figure. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada and later was appointed to the Legislative Council. His contributions to the community were recognized when he was inducted into the prestigious Beaver Club in 1795.

During the War of 1812, McGillivray's leadership was further exemplified by his appointment as lieutenant colonel in the Corps of Canadian Voyageurs. This rank reflected his significant position within the North West Company, as the Corps was formed from its employees, who served as soldiers during the conflict.

McGillivray's legacy extends beyond his business and political endeavors. He owned substantial estates in Scotland and Canada, including twelve thousand acres in Inverness Township and a notable residence in Montreal, situated in the early estates of the Golden Square Mile. His impact is commemorated in various locations, including McGillivray Ridge in British Columbia and several elementary schools across Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia.
