William Morris Hunt

William Morris Hunt, born on March thirty-first, eighteen twenty-four, was a prominent American painter, sculptor, graphic artist, lithographer, and draftsperson. Hailing from the politically influential Hunt family of Vermont, he pursued his artistic education in Paris, where he trained under the renowned realist Jean-François Millet. His time at the Barbizon artists’ colony profoundly shaped his artistic vision, leading him to establish a similar collective upon his return to America.

In Boston, Hunt emerged as the leading portrait and landscape painter of his time, gaining recognition for his exceptional talent. His artistic repertoire extended beyond painting, as he also excelled in lithography and sculpture. In eighteen seventy-one, his contributions to the art world were acknowledged when he was elected as an Associate Academician of the National Academy of Design.

Tragically, many of Hunt's masterpieces were lost in the Great Boston Fire of eighteen seventy-two, a disaster that marked a significant turning point in his life. Additionally, the deterioration of the stone panels in the State Capitol at Albany, New York, which featured several of his murals, compounded his struggles. These events are believed to have contributed to his declining mental health, ultimately leading to his depression and presumed suicide.
