William Murrill

William Murrill, born on November thirteenth, eighteen sixty-nine, was a prominent American mycologist, curator, and botanist. His extensive work significantly advanced the understanding of the Agaricales and Polyporaceae families of fungi. In nineteen oh four, he took on the role of assistant curator at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), where he played a pivotal role in the establishment of the journal Mycologia, serving as its first editor for sixteen years.

Murrill was known for his adventurous spirit, embarking on numerous collecting trips across the East Coast, Pacific Coast, Mexico, and the Caribbean. His travels were not just for leisure; they were dedicated to documenting the diverse mycota of these regions. Over the years, he amassed an impressive collection of seventy thousand specimens, with one thousand four hundred of these housed at the NYBG.

Despite his significant contributions and eventual rise to assistant director in nineteen oh eight, Murrill's eccentric personality sometimes created challenges in his professional life. His annual expeditions often occurred without prior notice to his colleagues, which occasionally led to friction within the organization. Nevertheless, his passion for mycology and dedication to his work left a lasting impact on the field.

In addition to his extensive fieldwork, Murrill may have published an exsiccata series titled Polyporaceae of North America, further showcasing his commitment to advancing mycological knowledge.
