William R. King

William R. King, born on April seventh, seventeen eighty-six, was a prominent American politician and diplomat. He served as the thirteenth vice president of the United States from March fourth until his untimely death in April eighteen fifty-three. Prior to his vice presidency, King represented North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives and later served as a senator from Alabama. His diplomatic career included a significant role as minister to France under President James K. Polk.

A member of the Democratic Party, King was known for his Unionist stance and was regarded as a moderate on critical issues such as sectionalism, slavery, and westward expansion. His political contributions were notable during a tumultuous period leading up to the American Civil War, including his involvement in drafting the Compromise of eighteen fifty.

King holds the unique distinction of being the only vice president to take the oath of office on foreign soil, having been inaugurated in Cuba due to his declining health. Tragically, he passed away from tuberculosis just forty-five days later, making him the third vice president to die in office. His tenure was notably brief, surpassed only by John Tyler and Andrew Johnson, both of whom ascended to the presidency. Additionally, King remains the only U.S. vice president hailing from Alabama.
