Willie Brown (politician)

Willie Lewis Brown Jr., born on March 20, 1934, in Mineola, Texas, is a distinguished American politician and attorney. He made history as the first African American mayor of San Francisco, serving from 1996 to 2004. Brown's journey began when he moved to San Francisco in 1951, where he graduated from San Francisco State University in 1955 and later earned his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1958. His early career was marked by involvement in the civil rights movement, which laid the foundation for his future political endeavors.

In 1964, Brown was elected to the California Assembly, quickly rising to prominence as one of the most influential state legislators in the country. His tenure as speaker of the California State Assembly from 1980 to 1995 was characterized by his strong advocacy for civil rights, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community.
