Naulls entered the professional arena when he was selected ninth overall by the St. Louis Hawks in the nineteen fifty-six NBA draft. His time with the Hawks was brief, as he was soon traded to the New York Knicks, where he would leave an indelible mark. During his tenure with the Knicks, he not only became a four-time NBA All-Star but also made history as the first African American captain of a professional team in a major American sport.

After a short stint with the San Francisco Warriors, Naulls concluded his career with the Boston Celtics. His time with the Celtics was particularly notable; in December nineteen sixty-four, he was part of a groundbreaking unit that became the first all-black starting lineup in NBA history.
